(Washington, DC) The Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) is pleased to announce that it has received $46,500 in funding from the Office on Human Rights to be awarded competitively to community-based organization(s) to provide community interpretation training for DC government employees and community members. The purpose of this grant is to secure high quality training to support language minority communities in their efforts to receive adequate bilingual interpretation services. Such training is important to increase the capacity of District agencies and community based organizations in order to assist Limited English Proficient (LEP) residents in the District of Columbia in accessing government services in Chinese (Mandarin), Korean, Vietnamese, and Amharic languages. The grant will be available to eligible community-based organizations serving the District’s Asian and Pacific Islander and African residents and merchants. OAPIA will work closely with the Office on African Affairs to ensure both API and African communities are appropriately addressed. OAPIA expects to formally release a Notice of Funding Availability in the coming week and a Request for Application sometime thereafter. More details of the grant opportunity will be forthcoming.
