The DC Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs and the Office of Planning announce the Chinatown Cultural Development Strategy (CCDS) project’s planning goals. CCDS is a project that aims to provide strategies and build support to revitalize DC’s Chinatown and position it as the region’s top destination for Chinese/ Asian cultural businesses, programs, services, events and festivals.
During two community planning meetings organized by CCDS, Chinatown residents, merchants, and community leaders proposed the following planning goals:
- Promoting Chinatown businesses: Support a thriving Asian business community in Chinatown and develop its role as cultural resource in Chinatown
- Making Chinatown an exciting and engaging place: Develop Chinatown as a safe and inviting place that physically has the look, feel, and excitement of a Chinatown
- Living in Chinatown: Promote Chinatown as a neighborhood where people live, shop and play, and encourage housing opportunities in and around Chinatown for Asian American Senior Citizens, Young Professionals and Families.
- Creating a Chinatown Cultural experience: Develop Chinatown as a regional, national, and international cultural destination which celebrates the Asian American experience through performances, museums, artwork and other cultural offerings.
- Working together: Foster strong unifying leadership for Chinatown and promote enduring partnerships with other stakeholders to build coalitions that will support and implement the Plan.
CCDS will hold its 3rd community meeting on Wednesday, December 10th at 7 pm at the Chinese Community Church (500 I Street, NW). It will feature the planning team’s initial recommendations for Chinatown’s future development based on the goals outlined by the community.
