The Mayor's Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (OAPIA) developed a profile on Asians in the District of Columbia primarily using data from the 2005 – 2007 three-year American Community Survey estimates. This data is a valuable research tool in that it provides characteristic estimate data on populations at a 20,000 threshold, whereas one year estimates have a threshold of 65,000. This allows OAPIA to provide data on the Asian community which happens to fall around the 20,000 threshold. These estimates are intended for research purposes and the Census warns against drawing conclusions or taking actions based on this data; the intent of this profile is informational and to create a demographic profile of Asian in the District.
Using these estimates as a profile, OAPIA seeks to illustrate changes in the Asian population in the District of Columbia and highlight various characteristics of this population, such as: population, income and poverty, education, immigration, English ability, employment and housing. In addition to three-year estimates, characteristics of ethnic subgroups may be available when the Census releases its five-year estimates.
OAPIA is committed to providing update information and data on the Asian community and continue to provide the latest information available.
