Call to Service! Come honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by serving your community on January 21, 2008! Community members across the District of Columbia and the world will join together in January to lead simultaneous community service projects. Be one of the 20,000 residents across the District to address unmet community needs through service and service-learning projects focusing on literacy, school violence, disaster relief, poverty, and urban decay.
DC’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day is successful because of a strong coalition of community partners that coordinates service projects. As we celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, Americans across the country remember and memorialize Dr. King by participating in service projects in their communities honoring Dr. King’s legacy of tolerance, peace, and equality by meeting community needs and making the holiday “A day ON, not a day OFF.” During his lifetime, Dr. King sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together to address important community issues. Service, he realized, was the great equalizer.
As lead agency for the MLK Day of Service, Serve DC will collaborate with the Office of the Secretary, and the MLK Holiday Commission and facilitate the matching of volunteers to volunteer sites by partnering with Points of Light Foundation and Hands On Network, Service for Peace, Corps Network, and the Corporation for National & Community Service to ensure that both citizens inside the District and within the Greater Metropolitan DC area are engaged in the day of service. The projects will range from city beautification to college preparation fairs. Operating under the slogan “His Dream, DC’s Choice,” Serve DC will utilize the day of service to progress sustainable programs that address the needs of the DC communities.
