Serve DC – The Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism, in conjunction with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), has created the Mayor’s Summer of Service (MSOS).  This creative opportunity for participants in Mayor Adrian M. Fenty’s 2009 Summer Youth Employment Program is designed to introduce more than 150 young people to meaningful community service in the District of Columbia.  Participants serving on teams of approximately ten youth will be assigned to host sites that address needs in the community.  MSOS participants will work on a range of activities including environmental clean-up and landscaping, trail and habitat restoration, tree planting and local park/open space greening, school and playground beautification, general facility painting and improvement, as well as working with children, seniors, pets, and local area shelters and food banks.  MSOS participants will also get the opportunity to take part in a variety of member development workshops focusing on the areas of service-learning, life skills, emergency preparedness, leadership and character development, civic engagement, job preparedness, career planning, and gang education and prevention.  The goal of each component of the program is to provide meaningful summer enrichment activities that encourage participants to make positive contributions to their communities through volunteerism.
