New Online Child Support Calculator Released

Washington, DC – Attorney General Linda Singer announced today that the Child Support Services Division (CSSD) rolled out a new on-line child support calculator.

The calculator allows parents involved in child support cases to enter income and other information and get an estimated order amount.  Parents may also print out a summary report with information on how the obligation was derived.  The calculator available to them is the same one that will be used in court.  Although the order level determined by the calculator will in most cases be what is ordered, the Court will have the final authority to determine the order amount.

“The calculator makes the process of setting child support amounts transparent.  Parents who understand how their order was determined will be more likely to pay,” said General Singer.

The calculator reflects the new guidelines--passed by the Council and approved by former Mayor Williams—that became effective April 1, 2007.  The guidelines take into consideration that both parents share the expenses of raising children and allocate costs in a more equitable way. The new calculator was developed as part of CSSD’s effort to implement the new guidelines.

“The new guidelines better take into account today’s living expenses and will create more fair orders that non-custodial parents can pay,” said CSSD Director Benidia A. Rice.
