CSSD Holds Non-Custodial Parent Empowerment Conference

This summer CSSD has been busy reaching out to non-custodial parents (NCPs) and helping them find work.

On July 30, OAG/CSSD held a Non-Custodial Parent (NCP) Empowerment Conference on the 11th floor at One Judiciary Square. The event was a big success: Despite the number of NCP's in attendance, which fell short of our targeted goal, the conference made a major impact on those individuals who did attend. A total of 16 NCP's (15 fathers and 1 mother) participated in the conference. The Department of Employment Services organized such workshops as “Writing a Winning Resume,” “Sealing the Deal in Interviewing,” “Survival Skills on the Job,” and “Employment Opportunities."

The day started with participants suspicious of CSSD's intentions and doubtful that the program would be in their best interest. Upon arrival, some feared that some type of legal action was going to be initiated against them. By the end of the day, as each attendee received a Certificate of Appreciation for their participation, the entire group was singing the praises of the program and the efforts of CSSD staff.  Participants said they were very happy to have attended, learned a great deal, and felt empowered to go forth and obtain employment.

Comments from the participants included:

"I was very impressed with the help and how they made me feel about myself."

"The information and its providers were outstanding. This was one of the most successful conference workshops I have attended."

“I didn’t know any of this before I came here. I’m so glad for you all!”

“Some guys just need to be motivated. This is a motivational class.”

August 20 was CSSD’s follow-up Employment Opportunity Fair. The NCPs returned to the 11th floor to meet with such employers as Unity Health Care, Guest Services, Inc., Nutrition, Inc., Macy’s, CVS, FedEx, Safeway, Flippo Construction and Capitol Area Asset Builders.

Some of the interviews were informational, but others were to discuss specific positions. Several of the interviews lasted for quite a long time which we all know is a good sign. The men wore suits and ties that they received from Menz Fit and looked very professional.

Thanks to the efforts of the Policy and Training Section and the Paternity and Community Outreach Section for organizing these excellent events.
