Water Main Breaks Affect East of the River Neighborhoods

Five water main breaks occurred in the early morning hours of May 6 in neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River.  Currently, work has been completed on all but two of the breaks - a 20-inch main break at 18th Street and Minnesota Avenue, SE, and a broken 16-inch main at 4th Street and Mississippi Avenue, SE. Crews from DC Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) and the DC Fire and Emergency Management Services (FEMS) Department continue to work to repair the breaks and ensure that FEMS fire suppression is ability is maintained. The DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) is also on site to coordinate response efforts and ensure that adequate resources are available.

Residents in neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River are advised to conserve water - no car washing, lawn watering or other activities that use large quantities of water - until the repairs are completed.
