The warmer months bring the possibility of severe weather in the District of Columbia, including extreme heat, thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods.
Hurricane season will begin June 1 and run through November 30. Early predictions call for an above average Atlantic hurricane season with 15 named storms, eight of which will become hurricanes and four of which will be category three or greater in intensity.
D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency Director Darrell Darnell urges residents to take steps now to be prepared in the event of severe summer weather. “Weather-related power outages, property damage and localized and flash floods are among the possible consequences of severe summer weather. Residents should prepare now for these occurrences. Our emergency information center website, http://72hours.dc.gov, can help citizens learn how to take four simple steps to be prepared – “make a plan”, “make a kit”, “get informed” and “be aware”.
