The District of Columbia will implement its multi-agency heat emergency plan today in response to forecasted temperatures in the low to mid-90s. The heat plan is activated when temperatures reach the mid-90s. As part of today’s implementation, the city will open cooling centers from 12 pm to 6 pm at four District government buildings:
- Frank Reeves Municipal Center, 2000 14th Street, NW
- Judiciary Square, 441 Fourth Street, NW
- Virginia Williams Center 920 Rhode island Avenue, NE
- King Office Building, 3720 Martin Luther King, Jr., Avenue, SE
Residents are urged to take precautions to guard against over exposure to the heat. The elderly, the very young and persons with respiratory illnesses should try to remain indoors if at all possible. If they must go outside, they should limit exposure to the sun, wear light-colored, lightweight and loose fitting clothes and drink plenty of water.
