(Washington, DC) The Office of the City Administrator formally endorsed and expanded the permanent voting members of the District of Columbia GIS Steering Committee (GISSC).The GISSC is an open forum for the exchange of information and ideas established by Mayor’s Order 2002-27 on February 4, 2002. The expansion is an immediate success of the recently finalized DC GIS Strategic Plan, embodying input from the DC Geographic Information System (DC GIS) stakeholder community.
Existing members include the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO), District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Office of Planning (OP), and the Office of the City Administrator (OCA). At the request of the GISSC, permanent membership now includes the following agencies and authorities plus the United States Geological Survey, a federal partner having non-voting status:
- Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA)
- Department of Health (DOH)
- Department of Public Works (DPW)
- District Department of the Environment (DDOE)
- Fire and Emergency Medical Services (FEMS)
- Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA)
- Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)
- Office of Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED)
- Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR)
- Office of Unified Communications (OUC)
- Office of Zoning (OZ)
- Water and Sewer Authority (WASA)
The current and expanded members will now move forward with improving the committee such as developing by-laws for governance, establishing sub-committees and producing a business plan for DC GIS.
A memorandum from the CA’s office further details the importance of this expansion. "As I regularly witness, the DC GIS is a tangible success. District agencies work together producing, maintaining, and most importantly sharing more than 250 map layers and numerous applications and software licenses.” – Dan Tangherlini, City Administrator.
