DC GIS Summer Youth Interns Participate in the CoastLines Project

The 2009 CoastLines Summer Institute was held at the DC Geographic Information Systems (DC GIS) office at Jefferson Middle School in southwest. DC GIS Summer Youth Interns participated in the project using geospatial technologies as tools for research, the collection of data, analyzing ecosystems and identifying disturbance patterns in the District's waterways. The two week institute featured field trips to the Baltimore Ecosystem Study Long-Term Ecological Research site, Rock Creek Park and the Potomac River aboard the historic schooner, American Spirit.

CoastLines is a three-year comprehensive project for students and teachers funded by the Information Technologies for Students and Teachers program at the National Science Foundation. It introduces fundamental concepts about information technologies to grade 7-12 schools. The project accomplishes this goal by involving teachers and students in using geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) to conduct scientific studies of coastal ecosystems.
