DC GIS Utilization Increases Throughout the Fiscal Year

Usage of the DC Geographic Information System (DC GIS) central database experienced a 30 percent growth from Fiscal Year 2008 to 2009. Additionally, downloads from the DC GIS Clearinghouse/Catalog increased by 28 percent in the same time frame.

The DC GIS database contains over 400 geographic data layers spatially referenced to the Earth's surface. The database, launched in 2006, is used to support various map services, web services, direct data connections, live data feeds and more. Much of the data is unique to the Washington, DC metropolitan area and is the result of a strong cooperation across the DC GIS stakeholder community.

"The growth in utilization of the DC GIS data and systems indicates that citizens and DC employees find the information and analysis useful and they are coming back for more. Many of the costs involved in providing a comprehensive GIS are fixed, for example updated maps from aerial photography. DC’s goal is to have our fixed investment utilized everywhere across government and public where it can be helpful. These statistics show that we are making measurable progress." -Barney Krucoff, DC GIS Program Manager
