NBC 4 and CNBC both featured TV news covering the District of Columbia's use of Google (Earth) DC and mobile GIS technology for public safety.
NBC 4 focused its coverage on the District's Fire and Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) and Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) response to the fire hydrant problem. Together, FEMS and WASA are better managing hydrant information and keeping up with maintenance. Firefighters now use handheld units loaded with mobile GIS software, developed by WASA using ESRI technology, to collect critical hydrant data such as flow rates and condition. Also featured was the use of Google (Earth) DC, developed by the Chief Technology Office, for FEMS situational awareness. CNBC's hour-long coverage of Google, Inc., concluded with FEMS use of Google (Earth) DC.
