District Continues Heat Emergency Plan

(Washington, DC) The National Weather Service continues the heat advisory today until 8 pm Tuesday evening. A forecast of temperatures between 95 and 100 degrees with humid conditions will yield heat index values near 105.  The Metropolitan Council of Governments has also determined that the air quality index is at Code Red

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected.  Code Red is called when there is stagnant air, little chance of rain and high humidity.  The combination of heat and humidity and poor air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including seniors citizens.

Older persons should avoid mid-day sun. If you must go out, remember to take protective measures to ensure that you will not be affected by the extreme temperatures such as, stay in the shade, wear a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella, wear light-colored and light-weight clothing, drink plenty of decaffeinated liquids and take it easy.

Seniors who do not have air-conditioned living quarters should visit an air-conditioned senior center or public place.
