(Washington, DC) Congratulations to Shirley Rivens Smith, who was crowned Ms. Senior DC 2009. She competed in the Ms. Senior DC Pageant with seven other District women age 60 and older. The contestants were scored on a personal interview with the judges, their statement of philosophy of life, and their talent and evening gown presentations.
Active in her community and in her sorority, Smith was also awarded Best Interview and Best Salesperson. She works to increase the awareness of others of the people and resources of Africa and during her talent presenation she performed an African dance.
First runner-up Willet Moore was awarded Best Talent for her inspirational dance during the competition. Second Runner up was Maragaret Carter, a retired police officer and current business owner. Carter performed a dramatic presentation depicting entrepreneur Madame CJ Walker. Lailine O. Harris, an 85 year old retired educatior was selected as Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants.
During the contest, the MC Steppers performed "Thriller" to the excitement of all in attendance. The dance was planned before the death of Michael Jackson and served as a special tribute to the singer and performer. The complicated dance moves and costumes followed the "Masquerade Ball" theme and the clock strike of 12 when Ms. Senior DC 2008 RC Turner's beautiful ball gown turned into rags as she stumbles into a cemetary. The opening number featuring the Banneker Dancers, the contestants and the MC Steppers captivated the pageant audience.
Ms. Senior DC will 2009 Shirley Rivens Smith will represent her peers in the upcoming Ms. Senior America Pageant to be held in Atlantic City in October. She will compete against women from across the country in the pageant that celebrates the age of elegance and the inner beauty and community service of the mature woman.
