District Seniors Take the Challenge with "You Can!" to Promote a Healthier, More Active Lifestyle

Seniors citizens across the District began a campaign this week to "eat better and move more." The Office on Aging is a partner in this 12-week program entitled "You Can! - Steps to a Healthier Aging." Seniors will set goals and log their progress in a logbook in an effort to eat nutritiously and increase physical activity. Each senior is also asked to set a goal for nutrition and a goal for physical activity based on their level of activity and lifestyle.

Each of the three Office on Aging wellness centers and other wellness programs are hosting the program. Seniors interested in participating may contact the DC Office on Aging Information and Assistance Unit at (202) 724-5626 to find the nearest program.

The Office on Aging staff were also asked to begin the "You Can!" program. Staff received pedometers and logbooks to help count their steps and log their progress. Staff members were encouraged to choose partners to keep each other motivated.

"You Can!" is part of the Steps to a Healthier US campaign launched by the Department of Health and Human Services.
