DCHR Partners With OLA, OAA and OAPIA to Recruit Bilingual Employees

Mayor Adrian Fenty is hosting the 4th annual DiverseCITY Job Fair on Friday, September 21, 2007. The target audiences include qualified bilingual and Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals for public and private sector opportunities. The Office on Asian Pacific Islander Affairs (OPIA), Office on Latino Affairs (OLA) and the Office on African Affairs (OAA), in partnership with the DC Department of Human Resources, will host a citywide job fair to recruit bilingual residents of the District of Columbia.

The 4th Annual DiverseCITY Job Fair will be held in the National Building Museum located at 401 F Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001 (Metro: Red Line, Judiciary Square Station, National Building Museum Exit), on Friday, September 21, 2007 from 10 am to 4 pm.  It is expected that this will be the largest bilingual job fair held to attract Asian and Pacific Islander, Latino and African individuals in the metropolitan Washington region.

This year’s job fair builds on the successes and model of the Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs’Annual DiverseCity Job Fair.  This year, OAPIA is working with the Office on Latino Affairs and Office on African Affairs in an effort to diversify workforces and provide opportunities to underserved, limited English proficient populations in the District.

“The District has one of the most diverse populations of any city in the country,” says DCHR Director Brender L. Gregory. “Ensuring our government’s workforce mirrors that diversity is a top priority of the Fenty Administration.”

Ms. Gregory says recruiting bilingual employees, especially for positions that interact with the public on a daily basis, will only further improve customer service for both the residents and District employees.

“Being able to effectively and accurately communicate is the only way we can ensure we are providing the excellent service our internal and external customers deserve and that we are receiving the feedback we need to make further improvements,” Ms. Gregory said. “We need to harness the immense talents of our bilingual community.”
