DCRA Announces Multi-agency SALT Symposium

(Washington, DC) The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs’ (DCRA) Office of Consumer Protection and the DC Office on Aging (DCOA) are working together to present the first-ever Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) Symposium on February 7, 2007.

Recognizing the special needs of an older population, the symposium will focus on the security and well being of older citizens through public awareness, training and criminal justice services.

What

SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) Symposium (includes senior fair, “reverse boiler room” and SALT Council meeting)

When

Wednesday, February 7, 2007, 10 am to 2 pm

Where

Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert Street, NW

The symposium's agenda includes the following:

  • Triad 101: A description of the Triad program that teams seniors, senior service providers, and law enforcement to prevent crime against seniors.
  • Reverse Boiler Room: An interactive forum operation that educates victims of consumer crimes (see below).
  • Senior Fair: The fair features information on filing a consumer complaint.
  • Inaugural SALT Council Meeting: The meeting is open to public.

DCRA's Office of Consumer Protection will operate a reverse boiler room to actively inform victims of financial fraud and consumer scams of their rights and possible options for protection options. Victim lists will be provided by the US Postal Inspection Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Symposium officials will call these victims and give them information necessary to reduce their chances of further victimization.
