DCRA Warns District Landlords to Comply With Air Conditioning Laws or Face Stiff Penalties

(Washington, DC) — The DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) reminds all District renters that landlords are required to keep your housing units at least 15 degrees cooler than the outside temperature.

If landlords fail to comply, they could face a fine of $1,000 and other potential penalties.

If your lease includes air conditioning through individual units or a central air conditioning system, then the inside temperature must be at least 15 degrees cooler than the outside temperature. The law applies only when the lease states air conditioning is provided.

Residents are encouraged to can report violations by calling (202) 442-4400 or via email. Residents should call 311 if reporting violations after normal business hours.
