DCRA Accepting Business License Applications for General Contractors, Construction Managers

(Washington, DC) - The District of Columbia now requires all individuals or companies engaged in the business of general contracting or construction management to obtain a business license from the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs.

Licenses are being issued for the following five (5) classes:

  • Class A – The holder of a Class A license is subject to no limitation as to the value of any single contract project.
  • Class B – The holder of a Class B license is not entitled to engage in the construction of any single contract project of a value in excess of ten million dollars ($10,000,000).
  • Class C – The holder of a Class C license is not entitled to engage in the construction of any single contract project of a value in excess of five million dollars ($5,000,000).
  • Class D – The holder of a Class D license is not entitled to engage in the construction of any single contract project of a value in excess of two million dollars ($2,000,000).
  • Class E - The holder of a Class E license is not entitled to engage in the construction of any single contract project of a value in excess of five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000).

The total fee for obtaining a general contractor/construction manager business license is $595 and the license is valid for two years. This new license was authorized by D.C. Law 17-219 and will allow the District of Columbia to protect consumers by identifying and taking enforcement actions against unlicensed general contractors operating in the city.

More information and application materials for the General Contractor/Construction Manager Basic Business License are available at the BBL Information Center.

Currently licensed Home Improvement Contractors who would like to apply for the General Contractor/Construction Manager license will be required to pay the difference in cost. DCRA encourages all contractors who may serve as a general contractor or construction manager to seek this license.
