DCRA Notifies Tenants and Landlords About the Rent Control Reform Amendment Act of 2006

(Washington, DC) Are you a tenant or landlord in the District of Columbia?

You should know that new rent control laws go into effect on August 4, 2006.

The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) has prepared a pamphlet explaining renters' rights and landlord responsibilities. You may view the pamphlet* online or visit DCRA's Rental Accommodations and Conversion Division (RACD) to obtain a copy.

Here are a few highlights from the new law:

  • Rent ceilings are eliminated and the basis for future rent increases is clarified.
  • Future rent increases must be based on current rent charged on August 4, 2006.
  • Rent adjustments for elderly and disabled tenants are limited.
  • Landlords must tell tenants about a rental unit's history and rent control status.
