DDOE Provides Over $10 Million to Assist Low-Income District Households With Utility Bills

Between October 1, 2006 and August 24, 2007, the District Department of the Environment's Energy Division (DDOE) distributed over $10 million to assist approximately 24,000 low-income District households with energy bills. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible District households meet the rising cost of home energy which includes gas, electricity, or home heating oil. Due to all Fiscal Year 2007 program funds being exhausted, LIHEAP closed on Friday, August 24, 2007 and will reopen on Monday, October 1st 2007 for the 2007 - 2008 heating season.

Although LIHEAP is closed for the remainder of FY 2007, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the Utility Discount Programs (UDP) which offer discounted rates on electric, gas, telephone and water bills. Eligible residents may also qualify to receive a $250 credit toward their Pepco bill.
