District Government Announces Energy Conservation Campaign

MEDIA CONTACT: Alan Heymann (202) 741-2136

The Office of Property Management (OPM) and the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) will roll out an Energy Conservation Campaign this week to encourage employees to reduce their energy consumption in District facilities.

“More than a third of this government’s energy use comes from what we plug into our wall sockets,” said DDOE Director George S. Hawkins. “Our goal is to reduce the amount of power used by each employee.”

Employees will be asked to sign a pledge to participate in the conservation effort and personally reduce their electrical consumption. Cutting energy use will help the environment and lower utility costs to taxpayers. The campaign will be implemented in 22 District facilities from July 20 until the end of August.

“The District already constructs and renovates our facilities to be as energy-efficient as possible,” said OPM Director Robin-Eve Jasper. “We now look forward to working with employees to reduce our energy consumption even further.”

Participants of the Mayor’s Green Summer Job Corps will assist in the energy campaign by providing helpful tips on how to minimize an employee’s impact in the workplace.
