Mayor Williams to Launch Downtown Congestion Task Force

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams has launched the Mayor's Downtown Congestion Task Force with Councilmembers Carol Schwartz, Jack Evans, Harold Brazil, Sharon Ambrose and Jim Graham and members of the business community, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, business improvement districts and relevant city agencies. The Task Force will seek legislative and regulatory measures to manage congestion in the central business district.

Mayor Williams also announced the completion and release of the report by the Mayor's Parking Task Force. It includes proposals to improve the Residential Parking Program and make more parking available to shoppers and visitors in commercial areas.

"Parking and congestion are important interrelated issues and I encourage you to 'think big' and come up with new solutions," said Mayor Williams. "At the same time we have to find policies and procedures that the District can actually execute."

The Downtown Congestion Task Force will seek legislation and regulatory measures to better manage congestion in the central business district. These actions will implement District Department of Transportation analyses on motor carriers and tour buses as well as the just-released parking study.

The kick-off included Dan Tangherlini, director of the District Department of Transportation and Rich Bradley executive director of the Downtown Business Improvement District. It also featured officials from London and Victoria, British Columbia, who discussed the innovative congestion reduction measures they have enacted.

The studies are available on the DDOT website under Transportation Studies.
