9th Street NE Bridge Reopened after Emergency Repairs

(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation reopened the 9th St., NE, Bridge to regular traffic today as planned. The bridge was closed last month for emergency repairs because one of the piers had deteriorated so that it was no longer providing the necessary support and needed emergency repairs. During the closure, DDOT took advantage of the low traffic to repave Brentwood Road with a coat of asphalt.

“We realize the inconvenience this caused, particularly to the motorists trying to get to the new Brentwood Shopping Center, BET, Amtrak and the Post Office, but we must maintain the highest level of safety for our transportation system,” said Dan Tangherlini, Director of the Department of Transportation. “We plan to replace this bridge with a new parallel span and reconstruct Brentwood Road starting later this year and we will work hard to minimize the disruption from these projects.”

The 9th Street Bridge carries about 20,000 vehicles every weekday.
