DDOT Garners Award From International Road Federation

Contact (Media Only): Erik Linden (202) 671-2004

(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is pleased to announce it was recently the recipient of the International Road Federation (IRF) 2006 Global Road Achievement Award.  The award was presented at IRF’s annual ceremony held last month.

IRF gave DDOT the award in recognition of “design-build” roadway improvements recently implemented on local roads in Wards 3 and 4.

Design-build is a project delivery method in which the agency or owner holds a single contract with a single entity for both the design and construction of a project.

“This is great news for the team of DDOT staff and our partners who worked so diligently on these projects,” said Emeka Moneme, DDOT’s acting Director. “It’s a great honor to receive the distinguished recognition of the International Road Federation and I thank them for this generous award.”

The contract included design-build repairs in approximately 108 locations including upgrading of 24 roadway locations, reconstruction at 25 locations, and the resurfacing of 59 locations. The work sites that DDOT won the award for include:

  • Vine Street—Fast track construction to minimize impact to commercial and residential use.
  • W Street at 42nd Street—Created on-street parking
  • Upton Street—repairs to street to combat major drainage and flooding
  • 36th Street— Water main and lead service line replacements
  • Woodley Road and Ordway Street—Reconstructed and installed historic elements on these historic streets
  • 18th Street, Taylor Street—Lead service replacement work

The Federal Highway Administration’s Eastern Federal Lands Division provided the contracting support and day-to-day program which was a joint venture of Parsons Transportation Group, Professional Corporation and Fort Myer Construction Corporation (Parsons/FMCC).  Work was initiated in May 2002.  DDOT coordinated efforts through concerted outreach efforts with communities, utilities and other stakeholders.

The International Road Federation’s Global Road Achievement Awards program is a competition to honor and recognize IRF members that demonstrate excellence and innovation in road development worldwide.
