(Washington, DC) The DC Council today unanimously confirmed Emeka Moneme as Director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). Mr. Moneme was appointed acting Director of DDOT in January 2007 by Mayor Adrian M. Fenty.
“I am honored and thrilled to be confirmed as the new DDOT Director,” said Moneme. “DDOT is a premier agency in the District and I look forward to working with the extraordinary team of DDOT personnel as we continue to enhance the District’s transportation network. I deeply appreciate Mayor Fenty’s support and confidence in my abilities in continuing the DDOT tradition of excellence. I also am grateful for the support of Councilmember Jim Graham, chair of the City Council’s Committee on Public Works and the Environment.”
Mr. Moneme is a public management and finance professional with years of experience developing and implementing corporate strategy for public and private sector organizations. The majority of his experience has been in the transportation sector, primarily the highway and transit industries. He most recently served as the Chief of Staff for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
Emeka began his career with the District of Columbia government in 2000, with what was then the Department of Public Works (DPW). He worked closely with the transportation director to develop the management case and legislative proposal for the creation of a stand-alone Department of Transportation, and then helped facilitate its implementation.
Other major accomplishments during his tenure with DDOT include facilitating the creation of the agency’s first business plan and directing reforms to the capital programming process. He went on to serve as the department’s senior advisor on financial and federal legislative issues.
Mr. Moneme further developed and enhanced his skills as a management consultant working with public and private sector clients. In this role, he worked on wide range of projects, from providing management efficiency consulting for state and local government agencies to performing due diligence services for major transportation financing transactions.
In 2006, Emeka joined WMATA as Chief of Staff. In this role, he served as the chief management advisor to the General Manager and worked closely with other WMATA senior executives to coordinate the Authority’s overall business strategy and identify and implement new initiatives.
Mr. Moneme—a former professional soccer player—holds a B.S. degree in Aeronautics from Miami University (Ohio - 1995) and a Masters of Urban Planning from the University of Cincinnati (2000). He and his wife, Celeste, have four children.
