(Washington, DC) Emeka Moneme, Director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and Councilmember Jim Graham (Ward 1) today joined community leaders and residents for the unveiling of the LeDroit Park gateway arch. The unveiling celebrates the completion of the second phase of streetscape upgrades in the LeDroit Park neighborhood in Northwest.
“Today’s ceremony is a culmination of hours of hard work by the DDOT team and the LeDroit Park community,” said Moneme. “This project defines the word ‘partnership.’ It was through the hard work of the LeDroit Park Civic Association and their dedication to the betterment of this community that we are here today. I thank all of our partners and particularly Councilmember Graham for his steadfast support of DDOT’s efforts.”
This second phase of the project included upgrading Second, Third, Fifth and Sixth Streets between R Street and U Street, NW.
These upgrades included:
- Resurfaced roadways
- New brick sidewalks, New tree boxes and trees
- Landscaping
- Utility upgrades
- And streetlights (historic Washington Globes)
As part of this project DDOT worked very closely with the LeDroit Park Civic Association (LPCA) and Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1B on several successful initiatives—including the dedication of T Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets, NW, to “Home of Walter Washington Way.”
The third and final phase of the project, which includes Fourth Street between Florida and W Streets, is slated to begin later this month.
The gateway arch is fabricated from cast iron and is 10 feet wide and 12 feet tall. It stands at the corner of Sixth and T Streets, NW, and symbolizes an entrance into the LeDroit Park historic neighborhood.
