New Traffic Signals in Southeast and Northwest Get Rolling
Signals Went Into “Flash” Mode Yesterday; Set for Full Operation May 15

Contact (Media Only): Erik Linden (202) 671-2004

(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is pleased to announce the installation of two new traffic signals—one in the Barracks Row neighborhood in Southeast and one in Tenleytown, NW.

Both signals went into “flash” mode yesterday to alert motorists and pedestrians of their imminent arrival. The signals are scheduled to move into full-color operation mode on or about May 15, 2007. The new signals will enhance pedestrian safety and will be coordinated with neighboring signals. The new signals will also allow intersecting traffic to navigate safely.

Locations of new traffic signals:

  • 8th and E Streets, SE
    • Benefit: Residents and businesses requested the signal and DDOT conducted a full study to determine if a signal was warranted. DDOT confirmed that a signal was warranted, in part due to increased development on Eighth Street following DDOT’s streetscape improvements to the street in 2004 (an $8 million project).
  • Wisconsin Avenue at River Road, NW
    • Benefit: Drivers coming inbound on River Road will now have access to outbound Wisconsin Avenue, which will help navigate traffic and diminish traffic on nearby neighborhood streets.
