(Washington, DC) Mayor Adrian M. Fenty joined Emeka Moneme, Director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and other officials on Tuesday to celebrate the completion of DDOT’s year-long upgrade on Florida Avenue, NW.
The project ran from 9th Street, NW, to North Capitol Street. Also joining today’s event: Councilmember Jim Graham (Ward 1), Councilmember Harry Thomas (Ward 5) and ANC Commissioner Anita Bonds, whose single member district includes the site where the event was held.
“This work is a symbol of how transportation upgrades can really help transform an area,” said Mayor Fenty. “I’m proud of the work DDOT has done on this corridor. I’m also thrilled that the residents who live in this area can take advantage of improved pedestrian access while motorists experience a much smoother ride.”
DDOT Director Emeka Moneme said: “This stretch of Florida Avenue was for a long time been one of the most difficult roadways to travel on for motorists and pedestrians. We worked hard to improve safety while improving overall transportation on this corridor. It really looks fantastic.”
The $5 million rehabilitation and upgrade featured:
- Streetscape redesign and fully resurfaced roadway
- New granite curbs and new gutters
- New brick sidewalks
- New historic Washington Globe streetlights
- New striping, signage and pedestrian safety upgrades
