DDOT’s New “Modernized” Bus Shelters are Sprouting Up
Agreement With Clear Channel to Build, Maintain Shelters Helps Fund “Great Streets” Initiative

Media Contact: Erik Linden @ DDOT, 202-671-2004

(Washington, DC) Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Emeka Moneme today unveiled DDOT’s new bus shelters at an event held in Northeast in Ward 7. Councilmember Yvette Alexander (Ward 7) joined Fenty and Moneme.

More than 40 of the new bus shelters have been installed across the District, with more than 600 more on the horizon.

The shelter installations are the result of an agreement signed by the District and ClearChannel Adshel.  The new bus shelters are replacing existing bus shelters across all eight wards in District neighborhoods and downtown. New shelters have also been added into new locations based in part on public input at DDOT town hall meetings.

“This is an exciting day for the District of Columbia,” said Mayor Fenty. “In neighborhoods across our city, we’re investing in the public transportation infrastructure for our residents who depend on it every day.”

Emeka Moneme, DDOT Director said: “We’ve been working hard with Clear Channel on this exciting public-private partnership and it’s coming to fruition today. These shelters are a symbol of how we can creatively link with the private sector to upgrade transportation systems in the District.”

ClearChannel Adshel builds and maintains the shelters in exchange for advertising rights on the shelters.

The District expects to receive more than $150 million in revenue from this contract over the next 20 years to finance DDOT's “Great Streets Initiative” to beautify some of the major transportation corridors in the District.

Great Streets is a major transportation investment to transform the following thoroughfares:

ClearChannel Adshel will also be responsible for heritage trail and directional sign maintenance and give the District $350,000 annually in in-kind revenue for local and international DC promotion.

Additionally, the company will set up a Web-based maintenance monitoring and reporting system and a 24-hour service line.
