Ledroit Park Streetscape Makeover: It’s A Wrap!

Media Contact: Karyn LeBlanc @ DDOT, 202-671-3490 or Karyn.LeBlanc@dc.gov

(Washington, DC) Mayor Adrian M. Fenty today joined the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Councilmember Jim Graham (Ward 1) and local residents to celebrate the completed streetscape restoration of the LeDroit Park area.

“Take a walk around this neighborhood and you can see firsthand the improvements that have been made. The transformation here is exciting,” said Mayor Adrian M. Fenty. “Transportation enhancements can truly help a community, and LeDroit Park is an example of that.”

The three-phased, $11.5 million project included upgrading Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets between R Street and U Street, NW.

These upgrades included:

  • Resurfaced roadways, new brick sidewalks, tree boxes, trees, landscaping, utility upgrades and street lights (historic Washington Globes).
  • The final stage of work on Fourth Street is nearly complete, with roadway striping to be finalized once temperatures rise above 50 degrees.

As part of this project DDOT worked very closely with the LeDroit Park Civic Association (LPCA) and ANC1B on several successful initiatives including the dedication of T Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets, NW to “Home of Walter Washington Way.”

DDOT Director Emeka Moneme said: “DDOT worked very closely with the ANC and the LeDroit Park Civic Association and Councilmember Graham’s office along with residents and neighbors throughout this process. We made a real effort to build a streetscape that adhered to the historic significance of the neighborhood and showcased some of its rich heritage.”

“The streetscape improvements restore the historic LeDroit Park neighborhood to its original world-class status,” said Councilmember Graham.
