DDOT Announces Implementation of Work Zone Standards for Pedestrian Safety
Better Pedestrian Protection at Construction Sites Required

Media Contact: Karyn Le Blanc @ 202-671-3490

(Washington, D.C.) Adrian M. Fenty, Mayor of the District of Columbia along with Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham and Emeka Moneme, Director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced the implementation of new work zone standards to require either covered walkways or protected open walkways at most construction sites.  These standards address the safety concerns expressed by residents and visitors regarding construction related sidewalk closings.

DDOT has been working with the DC Building Industry Association (DCBIA) and community leaders to develop the standards over this past year.

"We are proud that the District of Columbia will join other cities, such as New York and Cincinnati, in requiring alternatives to closed sidewalks,” said Adrian M. Fenty, Mayor of the District of Columbia.  "These new standards will help make the District of Columbia a safer and more pedestrian friendly place to live, visit and do business."

Sidewalk closings at construction sites will no longer be allowed once the new standards are fully implemented except in instances of a large building demolition or similar circumstances where public safety would be compromised, or the duration of the work is very short.
