WASHINGTON, DC — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is in the process of hiring new school crossing guards in a major expansion of this important program that helps students get to and from school safely.
The objective of the program is to provide a safe pedestrian and bicycle environment for students before and after school. Crossing guards are stationed at their assigned locations from 8 am to 10 am, and again from 2 pm to 4 pm. DDOT took over the School Crossing Guard from the Metropolitan Police Department 2007.
The number of guards in the program has steadily increased over the years to keep up with District growth and DDOT is currently recruiting and hiring qualified candidates for an additional 125 new positions that will be made available after October 1. Candidates must go through an extensive background check prior to hiring. New employees also attend mandatory training programs. The current program supports a total of 94 DC public and charter elementary schools, and the additional staff will allow DDOT to add more crossing points for elementary schools throughout the District.
The positions are part-time and pay between $24,468 and $30,075 a year. Anyone who is interested in applying should contact the DC Department of Human Resources (DCHR) at (202)442-9700, or online at www.dchr.dc.gov. Please inquire about job requisition # 11561, Safety Technician.
