District Prepares for Back-to-Back Storms

MEDIA CONTACTS:  John Lisle (DDOT) at 202-671-2004;  Nancee Lyons (DPW) at 202-671-2637

The National Weather Service predicts that two weather systems will enter the District area. The first is forecasted to begin this evening as rain and possibly turn to a rain/sleet/ice mixture as temperatures begin to drop during the night and into Sunday morning.

In anticipation of freezing temperatures throughout  the evening, the District’s Snow Team (District Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works) is planning a full deployment beginning at 11 pm. Nearly 200 pieces of equipment including heavy and light plows and sprayer trucks will be deployed to begin treating elevated surfaces and roadways, including bridges, overpasses and ramps as well as roadways and residential streets.

A second weather system is currently being forecasted for Sunday around 4 pm. Snow is predicted to fall through Sunday night into Monday morning with possible accumulations totaling one to two inches. Weather services continue to monitor this storm and further updates will be provided as the information becomes more certain.

Motorists are advised to proceed with caution. Additional information on the snow deployment plan may be found at ddot.dc.gov/snow.
