At the halfway point of the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) month-long Potholepalooza campaign, crews have repaired 3,366 potholes throughout the District's eight wards. That’s an average of 280 repairs each working day. Even the steady rain that soaked the area on Thursday didn’t slow the progress: DDOT’s crews and spray patch trucks braved the elements and filled 370 potholes.
Since Potholepalooza began on March 11, DDOT has received more than 300 service requests for pothole repairs from residents and motorists, but the pace of the complaints has dropped off in recent days.
“Early on, we got 70 service requests in a single day, but now about a dozen people are contacting us each day.” said DDOT’s acting Director Gabe Klein. “We would like to think that means we have filled all the potholes, but we know that is not the case and we hope people will continue to call, email and text us.”
To report a pothole, residents and commuters can contact DDOT in a variety of ways: 1) call the Mayor’s Call Center at 311, 2) use the Online Service Request Center at dc.gov, 3) text message or Tweet to twitter.com/DDOTDC, or 4) email to Potholepalooza@dc.gov. Callers must identify the location including the correct quadrant (northwest, northeast, southeast, southwest) in the city and as much detail as possible about the hazard, including the approximate size and depth of the pothole.
DDOT’s normal response time for a pothole repair is within 72 hours, but during Potholepalooza crews are working to fill identified potholes within 48 hours. Many of the service requests received to date were for multiple potholes on the same street. DDOT crews are also proactively looking for and repairing potholes they spot.
DDOT has also fielded complaints about utility cuts and sunken manhole covers. Those repairs are the responsibility of the utility companies. For more information, and for daily updates on Potholepalooza, please visit ddot.dc.gov/potholes.
