(Washington, DC) On Friday, May 15, the District will host a Bike to Work Day rally at Freedom Plaza, beginning at 8 am. This annual event promotes and celebrates bicycling as a healthy mode of transportation and hundreds of pedal-powered commuters are expected to participate.
Freedom Plaza is located directly in front of the Wilson Building and is bordered by Pennsylvania Avenue, 13th, 14th, and E Streets, NW. The rally will include food, drawings for prizes, and other activities. There will be convoys of cyclists arriving at the plaza from all over the region.
For the first time, DC will be home to a second pit stop rally at Nationals Park for commuters who work in or travel through that neighborhood. That rally is from 6:30 to 7:30 am.
If you would like to join a convoy, register, or need help finding a bicycle-friendly route to work, please contact the event organizers at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) at www.waba.org or (202) 518-0524.
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is working hard to make the District a more bicycle-friendly city. DDOT continues to build trails, add bike lanes and bike racks, and teach bicycle safety in the schools. Last year, DDOT launched SmartbikeDC, an automated bike sharing program that was the first of its kind in North America, and a bicycle transit center is now under construction at Union Station.
