(Washington, DC) — Mayor Fenty along with District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Gabe Klein is asking artists and designers to join in making a powerful visual statement about the environment through the design of special banners as part of The Urban Forest Project.
“We are excited to be participating in such a global statement for the preservation of the earth’s environment,” said Mayor Fenty. “We anticipate the artwork and banners to be hung next spring will act as a visual awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy canopy in not only our city but throughout the world.”
Each banner will use the form or metaphor for the tree to make a powerful visual statement about the environment. Together they’ll create a forest of thoughtful images in the urban landscape and raise awareness of the city’s innovative environmental initiatives.
“DDOT is truly honored to be taking the lead in this initiative,” said Director Klein. “We look forward to working with the sponsors and artists on developing these illustrations concerning the necessity of sustainability.”
The banners will be hung on light poles in a series of high-traffic locations in the District beginning in April 2010, coinciding with Earth and Arbor Days. Once the banners come down, they will be recycled into unique tote bags designed exclusively for the project. Sales from the bags will benefit local tree planting efforts.
This project was funded in part by a grant from the USDA Forest Service, Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry Programs.
The Urban Forest Project DC is being presented by DDOT in collaboration with Worldstudio and will also be funded in part through corporate sponsorship. If you are interested in learning more about how to sponsor or participate, please contact Andréa Pellegrino at email@example.com.
The project – an initiative of Worldstudio – was launched in New York's Times Square (http://www.ufp-nyc.com/) in the fall of 2006 in collaboration with Times Square Alliance.
