DDOT Selects Transportation Enhancement Projects
Ten Projects to Receive Funding in FY2010

Media Contact: John Lisle (DDOT) at (202) 671-2004

(Washington, DC) District residents will soon see some unique improvements in the city’s public space. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced ten projects selected to receive FY10 funding through DDOT’s Transportation Enhancement Program. The projects cover a wide spectrum of transportation related activities, include the conversion of a public alley into a innovative rain garden, preservation work on three historic murals on Barracks Row, and a sculpture garden in the median of New York Avenue.

Approximately $2 million in funding is available city-wide as part of the Transportation Enhancement Program for non-traditional projects that are linked to the District’s transportation system. The individual grants range from $50,000 to $579,500.

Transportation Enhancement Projects for FY10

Cultural Tourism DC:  Planning, design, fabrication and installation of self-guided neighborhood historic and cultural trails and signs.

Friends of Hardy:  Conversion of current public alley, located between Q Place, NW and Q Street, NW, into a publicly accessible alley rain garden. The alley rain garden will absorb stormwater runoff and accompanying pollutants that flush through the alley into the stormwater drains and Potomac River, and provide a safe and educational public walkway.

DDOT/District Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR):  Landscaping of Carter G. Woodson Park and creation/installation of public art.

National Museum of Women in the Arts:  Development of an allée of major contemporary sculptures and related improvements in the median of New York Avenue between 9th and 13th Streets, NW.

Tivoli North Business Association:  Installation of iron tree box fences from 3400 – 3900 blocks of 14th Street, NW.

Mount Pleasant Main Street:  Streetscape and safety improvements as called for in the Mt. Pleasant Streetscape Study.

NOMA Business Improvement District:  Landscape design and implementation to enhance the roadwork occurring on and around the New York/ Florida Avenue intersection.

Barracks Row Main Street: Stabilization of three historic murals along 8th Street, SE.

Downtown Business Improvement District:  Improvements to Chinatown Park, bounded by 5th Street, I Street, 6th Street and Massachusetts Avenue, NW.

Washington Area Bicyclist Association:  Bike parking & valet services, creation of a “Room to Breathe” poster, and bike outreach.

DDOT approved funding for the above projects after receiving 27 proposals earlier this year. Each transportation enhancement project must (1) relate to surface transportation and (2) meet at least one of twelve eligible activities geared towards bicycle and pedestrian facilities, scenic highway programs, historic preservation, railway corridor improvements as well as rights-of-way acquisitions. Additionally, the projects must be consistent with the mission, policies and plans of District agencies (eg, DDOT's Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plans, the Office of Planning's Comprehensive Plan).

Online applications, details about the twelve eligible activities and further submittal information can be found at www.ddot.dc.gov.

Funding for the projects is provided through the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). The aim of the program is to "strengthen the cultural, aesthetic, and environmental aspects of the Nation's intermodal transportation system."

Applications for fiscal year 2011 will be accepted beginning in May 2010 through August 2010. For more information, please contact Colleen Hawkinson at (202) 671-2228.
