(Washington, DC) The DC Circulator, the “Coolest Ride in Town,” is celebrating the first anniversary of its launch in July with free rides and extended hours.

During its first year, the Circulator provided 1.6 million total trips averaging a 9 percent increase every month. The Circulator—which now carries about 7,000 passengers per day—began its service on July 10, 2005 with two routes: the North/South route from the Convention Center to the Waterfront and the East/West route from Union Station to Georgetown. In March, a third route began around the perimeter of the National Mall. With this added route, the system carried its one-millionth passenger in April.

The Circulator regularly receives positive reviews from riders about system’s affordability, reliability and punctuality, as well as overall customer service. A recent survey resulted in the following facts: 1) 50 percent of riders transfer to the Circulator from another transit system; 2) 76 percent of those surveyed agreed with the statement “I prefer the Circulator to other public transit services”; 3) 100 percent would recommend the Circulator to others; and 4) half of all riders would like to see a fourth route linking Union Station to the Capital South Metrorail station and the upcoming Washington Nationals ballpark.
