(Washington, DC) The National Weather Service is predicting an additional 3-8 inches of rain and possible high winds throughout the evening and early morning hours. The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) is deploying crews throughout the evening and into the early morning hours to monitor flooding, road conditions and downed trees.
DDOT's Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) will be on call to clear downed trees and debris expected from additional rains and possible high winds. DDOT public space inspectors will also be deployed throughout the storm cycle monitoring road conditions.
The following roads remain closed at this time. Crews are on site conducing electrical and/or water damage repairs.
- Constitution Avenue between 12th Street and 17th Street NW
- Independence Avenue between 6th Street and 9th Street – eastbound lanes are closed
- South Capitol Street and Malcolm X Avenue – right lane is closed
- 15th Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Constitution Avenue
- 2000 block of Belmont Road
Signals are flashing at various intersections throughout the city. DDOT officials predict ongoing temporary outages throughout the storm. Crews will be dispatched to repair as necessary.
DDOT acting Director Michelle Pourciau urges residents and motorists to stay off the roads, if possible, during the storm. Road conditions could be hazardous with flash floods predicted.
"Residents and commuters can be our partners by working to find alternative modes of transportation tonight and tomorrow," said Pourciau. "We encourage residents to use caution when traveling on our city's roads and if you approach an intersection where lights are out, please treat it as a four-way stop sign."
A few tips from DDOT:
- If possible, stay home.
- If you need to travel, we recommend mass transit, check the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) website for scheduling.
- Traffic signal lights may be out. If you approach an intersection where the lights are not working, the traffic signal should be treated as a four-way stop.
- Call MPD Synchronized Command Center at (202) 727-9099 if you wish to report a non-working signalized intersection. MPD will deploy officers to assist with traffic.
- Roads may be flooded, please pay close attention to the road surface and drive slowly to avoid any potentially hazardous areas.
- To report tree or debris problems, please call (202) 727-1000.

- If flooding occurs in your area, please remember to help elderly or disabled neighbors.
- Do not drive through any high water areas. It is best to turn around and find an alternate route to your destination.

- Flood warnings are still in effect. Please monitor news bulletins, web site updates and media announcements throughout the day.
