"Street Smart" Pedestrian Safety Campaign Begins Regional Enforcement Waves
What: Live Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Event in Washington, DC.
- The crosswalk enforcement event targets motorists who do not stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk and is one tool MPD is using to protect pedestrians.
- The District is launching DDOT-funded overtime enforcement waves based on best-practice techniques taught at special training sessions.

Where: Enforcement to take place at the intersection of 14th Street and Shepherd Street, NW, north of Columbia Heights. 14th Street, NW, is a high pedestrian crash corridor. This location is a heavily used crosswalk without signals where drivers frequently fail to give pedestrians the right of way. Drivers are as likely as pedestrians to be responsible for pedestrian crashes.

- In Washington, DC, pedestrians and bicyclists accounted for nearly 40 percent of those killed on the roads in 2005.
