(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin the historic restoration and utility infrastructure upgrade of Thomas Circle, at 14th Street and Massachusetts Avenue, NW. The $5.6 million project, a joint effort of the National Park Service (NPS), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and DDOT, will redirect and smooth traffic flow around the Circle and restore pedestrian access by eliminating the north-south cut-through built in the 1950s.
The yearlong work will begin Monday, January 3, 2005 (weather permitting) and will be staged so as to minimize traffic impacts during construction.
- Road closures and traffic detours will be posted during the various stages of construction. Drivers are cautioned to be aware of traffic pattern changes and detour signs.
- Curbside parking will be restricted in various areas throughout the project according to traffic and work requirements. Parking restriction signs will be posted and enforced as necessary.
- Construction work hours are 7 am to 7 pm, Monday thru Friday. (Saturday work may be conducted when necessary)
- Variable Message Signs (VMS) alerting drivers of the upcoming construction have been posted.
