(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has started planting some 8,000 trees throughout the District, the most trees planted in a season in the last five years. The planting season runs from November through April.
"I am proud that DDOT will be taking this major step toward achieving the goal of the Williams Administration to reforest the District," said Dan Tangherlini, DDOT Director. "Trees minimize erosion and improve the aesthetics, environment and quality of life of a community."
DDOT's Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) will plant large trees, such as maples and oaks, medium trees, such as sweetgums and lindens, as well as crape myrtle and flowering cherry trees.
UFA will plant 6,000 street trees in the public space, generally between the curb and the sidewalk, and, in cooperation with the Department of Parks and Recreation, 2,000 trees in District-owned parks.
