DDOT Director, Councilmember Launch Carsharing Program

(Washington, DC) On Tuesday, November 22, at 10 am, Dan Tangherlini, Director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and Councilmember Jim Graham (Ward 1) will launch DDOT's carsharing program in the heart of Adams Morgan, the site of several on-street carsharing locations.

These carsharing spaces in Adams Morgan are among the 45-50 spaces that DDOT has designated throughtout the city in consultation with the local Advisory Neighborhood Commission and other community groups. These high visibility spaces are designed to expand carsharing usage and educate the public about carsharing's many benefits.

Carsharing helps reduce demand for parking and lower traffic congestion and air pollution because six-to-ten individuals or households share a car instead of each owning one. In fact, the relatively low annual and hourly carsharing fees, which cover insurance, fuel, maintenance and use charges, can make carsharing cheaper than car-ownership for people driving less than 10,000 miles annually.

Over the next few months DDOT will designate a few additional carsharing spaces throughout the city. These DDOT-designated spaces are in addition to approximately 150 carsharing parking spaces supplied by the carsharing companies on WMATA and private property.
