(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) was awarded an additional $7 million in federal transportation funds in this year’s end-of-the-fiscal year “redistribution” of money by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The District amount is the fourth-highest among the 50 states as a percent of federal annual funds received.
“This good news reflects DDOT’s ability to prudently spend the more than $100 million we receive every year from FHWA,” said Dan Tangherlini, Director of Transportation for the District. “We will use these new funds to repair the deck of the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge used by 100,000 drivers every weekday.”
Only Massachusetts, Hawaii and Louisiana were allocated more funds as a percent of total funds received.
FHWA awards these funds competitively based the ability of a state department of transportation to get projects underway quickly and other criteria. The award also reflects DDOT’s substantial management improvements as described in a recent study* by the Government Accountability Office.
