The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and DC Surface Transit Inc. released new ridership figures today for the DC Circulator service launched on July 10.
Weekday Circulator ridership grew 29 percent between July and August and is on track to grow another 12 percent from August to September - a total increase from 2,594 average daily weekday riders in July to 3,745 in September. Weekend ridership is growing more slowly at 2 percent per month.
The highest daily ridership to date in September was 4,261 boardings, an 18 percent increase over the top day in August of 3,610. The average number of daily Circulator riders has gone from 2,565 in July to 3,255 as of September 26.
"I am very pleased with the public's response to the Circulator and the ridership growth rate," said Dan Tangherlini, Director of Transportation for the District. "Our next challenge is to get non-traditional bus riders to leave their cars and travel across the city on the Circulator. Three-dollar-a-gallon gas is making people rethink their travel behavior, making the high-quality, attractive, frequent and easy-to-use Circulator that much more attractive."
