(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announces that Kenilworth Avenue/DC 295 in northeast is closed in both directions for approximately 48 hours (until noon Thursday) for emergency repairs to the bridge that carries Eastern Avenue over Kenilworth. The two service roadways remain open in both directions, but with much reduced capacity. The road normally carries over 100,000 vehicles per day.
DDOT is coordinating with the Metropolitan Police Department and Maryland and Virginia jurisdictions to inform motorists of the closure and advise them of alternate routes, including New York Avenue/Route 50, Rhode Island Avenue, Bladensburg and Benning Roads and Pennsylvania and Minnesota Avenues.
DDOT has mobilized a full crew to immediately start repairs on the north face of the bridge. It was hit several times by an over-height vehicle at about 7 am today. The damaged concrete on the southbound side is being removed to make sure it doesn't fall onto Kenilworth. The structure will be carefully examined before it is reopened.
