DDOT and Tivoli Partners to Revise Plan for Sidewalk at Giant

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has received revised streetscape plans from the Tivoli Partners for the new Giant grocery store at 14th and Park Road, NW. DDOT is currently reviewing the plans and will forward a copy of the plans to the community for review and comment.

At this time, DDOT plans to work with the Tivoli Partners, Councilmember Jim Graham and the neighborhood to revise the existing site plan on Park Road to return the sidewalk to pedestrian uses. DDOT will attempt to address customer parcel pickup needs at the curb, and also address traffic congestion resulting from unloading activities at the grocery store by replacing the current arrangement with a lay by. DDOT will also require the supermarket to remove shopping cart storage from the sidewalk as well as better manage deliveries.

"This is a decent compromise for the neighborhood and the business, better protecting pedestrians safety and returning much of the public space to the public," said Councilmember Graham who represents Ward 1 where the project is located.

"DDOT looks forward to working with all parties concerned to implement this compromise that meets the needs of Giant, the community and the public," said Dan Tangherlini, Director of Transportation.

Once this new streetscape concept has been coordinated, DDOT will issue a revised public space permit to Tivoli Partners with a construction schedule to ensure that the new streetscape is constructed in a timely manner. All construction will be scheduled and managed to minimize impact on the operations of the grocery store.
